5 Steps to Avoid a Diabetic Binge

Type 2 diabetes is caused by poor lifestyle choices. A lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet wreak havoc on your health. If left unchecked, it can lead to diabetes.

And if you’re a human being like me then I bet there have been a few binge episodes of eating tucked in there, right?

Don’t be ashamed. We’ve all been there. Sometimes when the eating starts, you just can’t stop it.

So instead of beating yourself up, here are 5 steps to prevent another night of binge eating from happening.

Step #1: Drink water with lemon first thing in the morning.

The moment that you wake up in the morning, before anything else, squeeze some fresh lemon into a full glass of water and drink it down. No need to chug it but drink it as comfortably as possible. This little trick gets your metabolism going, gives you a shot of antioxidants, and helps your body fight against inflammation.

This will help keep your body ready for the day so that you’re not as tempted to vacuum up all the food at the end of the day.

Step #2: Make a green smoothie.

Listen, I know there is serious hype around green smoothies, but it’s for a good reason. You get all of the fiber, antioxidants, and greens you need to start your day off right. By feeding your body all of the nutrients that it actually needs at the start of the day, you are less likely to be overcome by cravings at the end of the day. Need some inspiration? Check out these green smoothies we already posted here.

Step #3: Include more fiber in your diet.

Fiber is a magical nutrient that just seems to make everything better. It gets your digestion moving, slows down the absorption of glucose into the blood, and fills you up to a satisfying fullness. If you incorporate more fiber into your diet, you will definitely see cravings go down throughout the day.

Step #4: Get your head on straight.

Seriously. Stop looking at food as a forbidden indulgence and start seeing it for what it is: sustenance. The more that we treat food like some kind of secret treat, the more we are going to crave that treat. Do you want something sweet? Cool, me too! So grab a dark 70% cacao bar and have a few bites after lunch. No worries. But stop letting food act like a crazy possessive demon over you.

Step #5: Get better sleep.

When you’re not fully rested, you turn into a monster version of yourself. You get cranky, confused, hungry, and totally unable to control yourself. (Or wait, is that just me?) It’s true, though. Your brain gets seriously imbalanced when you don’t have a proper sleep, causing you to have poor self-control and decision-making skills. So fully prepare yourself against binge-eating by getting a good night’s rest.
