DIY Artificial Pancreas to Fight Diabetes

A story of a diabetes patient is making the rounds on the web. It’s the case is of Dana Lewis, who has type 1 diabetes. Your doctor has probably explained to you the difference between  type 1 and type 2 diabetes, but here’s a refresher:

  • Type 1 diabetes is caused by a lack of insulin production in the pancreas.
  • Type 2 diabetes is caused by a tolerance to insulin that is built over time.

Dana Lewis dealt with her type 1 diabetes in an unconventional way. She built a new pancreas.

Granted, it’s not a pancreas in the biological sense. It’s an open source computer system that monitors her blood sugar levels and provides insulin when needed. It’s connected to the insulin pump and glucose monitos she has been using for years.

Dana Lewis now leads a community of diabetics patients who are working constantly to innovate new technology to manage the condition.

This is the importance of the current trend in technology. Programming is incredibly important these days, and it has been having huge leaps in the past decades, especially after the rise of the internet.

Hmmm… maybe it’s a good idea to learn some new skills? You could be building your own atificial pancreas, or helping other overcome the condition.
