An Online Game That Can Help Diabetics?

Yes, you’ve heard it right. There’s an online game that helps diabetics learn how to control their blood sugar levels better by educating them about the disease. According to the study done on this online game, it was able to reduce the HbA1c levels of those who participated in the study and played the game.

The Study

The study was conducted over a 6-month period and involved 456 US Veterans Affairs patients. The participants all had Type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar levels are poorly controlled even on oral anti-diabetic medications.

The group was divided into two. One group played a team-based online game that aimed to educate them more about self-management of their diabetes, after which they were given papers on American history. The other group also played a team-based online game, but this group received questionnaires based on American history, after which they were given papers on self-management of diabetes.

The group who played the diabetes online game had to answer multiple choice questions about diabetes – how to control blood sugar, exercise and diet for diabetics, complications of diabetes, importance of taking their anti-diabetic medications, etc. They received two questions about diabetes each week for the duration of the study.

HbA1c levels as well as their microalbumin/creatinine ratio were measured before the study began, at the end of the study, and a year after the study.

The Outcome

Those who participated in the diabetes online game had a drop in their HbA1c level by about 0.74% compared to those who were in civics education game and only had a 0.44% reduction in their HbA1c level.

The study showed that diabetic education could significantly help diabetics control their blood sugar level. Although their HbA1c levels were still above normal, the game paves the way for diabetics to help the participants take the right step in controlling their disease. Diabetes education, the study showed, can positively impact a diabetic’s life.
